Wood is a traditional raw and work material with a variety of prospects. It is produced environmentally friendly and lastingly. Wood products show excellent technical properties and exemplary eco-balances.
The Fraunhofer-Institut für Holzforschung, Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut, WKI in Braunschweig works on current and future-oriented tasks in the use of wood and other regenerating raw materials.
This comprises methods for the production of particle and fiber materials, surface technologies, wood preservation measures, environmental research and recycling. Outstanding performances of the institute were and are
- development of innovative materials made of particles and fibers
- testing and the reduction of formaldehyde emission from wood-based
materials and furniture
- analysis of emissions from building materials and reduction of VOC (volatile organic compounds) and odorous substances
- development of environment-friendly and durable coating systems for furniture making and outdoor application of wood
- testing of and improvement on the properties of wooden materials by means of thermography, ultrasonics or nuclear spin resonance
- the recycling of production wastes and used furniture to the manufacture of particle and fiber boards
On an application-oriented basis the WKI works in close co-operation with
small and medium sized enterprises of the wood and furniture industry
as well as the supply industries. Many processes and materials resulting
from these activities are used on an industrial scale. The WKI is
member of the InnovaWood Initiative,
the umbrella organisation of European networks in the forest, wood-based
and furniture industries. In co-operation with South-east Asian research
facilities processes for the utilization of residues from the oil
palm cultivation and the palm oil production were elaborated.
The research and development work serves a better utilization of the raw material wood and the quality improvement of wooden products. The maintenance of old building stock and the sanitation of half-timbered houses as well as the development and the testing of modern wooden constructions are also part of the main tasks of the WKI.
