Testing Body for Mechanical and Surface Properties

Wood-based materials on the basis of solid-wood laminates, veneers, strands, particles or fibers are recognized and important building materials in interior applications as well as in moist and wet areas. In order to fulfill the diverse application requirements, various mechanical-technological tests are carried out to evaluate and characterize wood-based materials. The results of these tests are of use not only to the manufacturer, but also processors and end customers.    

Mechanical Properties

The Fraunhofer WKI specialist department Quality Assessment applies numerous recognized methods in order to test wood-based materials. The specialist department is accredited by the DAkkS (German Accreditation Body) as a testing and certifying body for material and products in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025.

The portfolio also includes material parameter tests, long-term testing, investigations into the influence of constant and changing climate and round-robin tests. 

 

Surface Properties

 

The suitability of coatings for furniture and floor coverings (e.g. laminate flooring) plays a role which is equally as important as the health and safety-relevant characteristics. For the following products, the Fraunhofer WKI offers surface testing in accordance with valid standards:

  • laminate flooring,
  • HPL,
  • furniture,
  • wooden floors and
  • parquet

The surface testing of these products as regards their adhesive strength, wear resistance, appearance, etc. as well as the research and development of new testing methods are core objectives in the Fraunhofer WKI Surfaces section. The knowledge and experience of our employees serve to develop innovation and offer scope for new ideas. The available technical equipment thereby enables these ideas to become reality.

The specialist department Quality Assessment can prove its competence in numerous testing methods for floorings via the accreditation in accordance with DIN EN ISO/EC 17025. The Fraunhofer WKI is a notified body (CPR 0765) and recognized testing, monitoring and certification body for building product DIN EN 14041: Resilient, textile and laminate floor coverings - Essential characteristics.
