Technology for Wood-Based Materials

Profile

Composite materials made from wood and other materials containing lignocellulose have a unique character: They are environmentally-friendly and extremely functional. We develop wood-based materials and natural fiber-reinforced composites as well as image-processing procedures for process and quality control. The spectrum of our material developments encompasses classic particle boards, medium-density fiberboards (MDF) and natural-fiber insulation boards through engineered wood products such as oriented strand boards (OSB), plywood, laminated veneer lumber (LVL) to wood-polymer materials (WPC), 3D molded parts and composite materials.

Research Focuses

 

Wood-based materials

We develop environmentally-friendly and resource-saving composite materials from wood, other lignocellulosic raw materials and secondary raw materials such as waste wood and production residues.

 

WPC

We research the manufacture, coating and bonding of Wood-Plastic Composites (WPC), in particular based on renewable resources. In addition, we are opening up new applications and marketing opportunities.

 

New (hybrid) materials

We develop future-oriented materials on the basis of renewable raw materials. They combine the positive properties of different materials.

 

Formaldehyde-free bonding

We optimize traditional binders and test new binders and bonding methods for veneer and two stages produced fiber materials.

 

Recycling of waste wood and WPC

We develop new sorting procedures and forms of usage for the efficient utilization of waste wood and old WPC.

 

Measurement technology

We develop and implement measurement methods for process and quality control within the wood-processing industry and other industrial sectors.

We are developing a climate-friendly alternative to foams made of petrochemical-based polymers. The new packaging material made from pure lignocellulose can be recycled together with cardboard secondary packaging.

A new method was implemented in order to produce aminoplastic resins on the basis of melamine and alternative aldehydes and to apply these as adhesives for wood materials and decorative coatings.

Recycling of waste wood

We develop sources of raw materials which have, until now, only been insufficiently utilized - for example, the wood categories A III and A IV, which are classified under the Waste Wood Ordnance as contaminated.

Non-destructive inspection of mounted rotor blades

We have developed a system which enables the non-destructive inspection of the mounted rotor blades. Dismantling of the blades is thereby unnecessary.
