Some people might say that America was founded on wood. Timber was an abundant resource when the first settlers arrived – fulfilling needs for shelter, cooking, heating, and transportation. As the new Americans moved west, farms, railroads, and towns consumed timber and replaced forest land with little or no regard for forest regeneration.
