GreenTec Awards 2015: Wood foam in the Top 3 for "Construction & Living"
Now we can only cross our fingers and hope: the wood foam developed by the Fraunhofer WKI is among the best three projects in the category “Bauen & Wohnen” (Construction & Living) for the GreenTec Awards. During the online voting, the wood foam received the most votes from the public in this category by far. At the end of February, a jury will decide which of the Top 3 will be the winner.
The GreenTec Award is the most prestigious European environment and business award. The decisions concerning the nominees and the winners in competition for the GreenTec Awards are made by a jury of sixty, composed of representatives from industry, science, associations and media, appointed by the organizers of the GreenTec Awards. In each of the 14 categories, the project which received the most online votes continued to the next round. The jury then selected two further projects per category. With a total of around 100 000 votes, the response to the online voting was overwhelming. In a second round of voting, on 25th February, 2015, the jury will select the winners from the best three projects in each category. The winners of the GreenTec Awards will receive their prizes during the course of a gala event in Berlin on 29th May, 2015.
The wood foam developed by the Fraunhofer WKI researchers unites the positive material properties of petroleum-based foams with a very good ecological balance - because it consists of nothing more than wood. As regards its carbon footprint, it therefore occupies a top position - in stark contrast to other insulation materials. In the future, wood foam could replace conventional petrochemical-based foams in numerous application areas: as packaging material, for heat and sound insulation, as a composite material or for structural usage. In contrast to conventional insulating materials, the wood foam can be easily recycled after use.
