80 Years of Fraunhofer WKI – 80 Years of Sustainability
On June 17, 2026, approximately 150 guests celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research, Wilhelm Klauditz Institute (WKI). In his speech, the President of the Fraunhofer Society, Professor Holger Hanselka, highlighted the Fraunhofer WKI’s continuous and far-reaching contribution to the realization of a bio-based circular economy. With a joint groundbreaking ceremony on the campus grounds, the invited guests of honor—including State Secretary Professor Joachim Schachtner and Braunschweig’s Mayor Dr. Thorsten Kornblum—also officially kicked off construction of the new technical center.
At the start of the event, guests from the worlds of politics, research, and business were set in the festive mood with a look back at the 80-year history of Fraunhofer WKI, current research highlights, and visions for the future.
“For 80 years, Fraunhofer WKI has stood for forward-looking research, combining scientific excellence with tangible practical impact. With its research areas ranging from raw material processing to material and product development and recycling, the institute not only makes an important contribution to the transition to a climate-neutral economy but also strengthens the innovative capacity of Germany as a business location, the state of Lower Saxony, and the Braunschweig region,” said Professor Holger Hanselka, President of the Fraunhofer Society. “Through close collaboration with academia, industry, and politics, Fraunhofer WKI has for decades been rapidly translating research results into marketable applications, thereby providing important impetus for sustainable innovations.”
“For decades, Fraunhofer WKI has stood for impactful research—originating in Lower Saxony and visible on the international stage. It owes this strength to the dedication of its staff and the vision of its founder, Dr. Wilhelm Klauditz. With the new technical center, we are making a targeted investment in the institute’s future. This will enable WKI to continue setting international standards in bio-based materials and technologies,” said Professor Joachim Schachtner, State Secretary at the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture.
The Mayor of Braunschweig, Dr. Thorsten Kornblum, emphasized the importance of Fraunhofer WKI for Braunschweig as a research hub: “Research into wood as a raw material is of paramount importance in Braunschweig. The sustainable use of resources and innovative approaches to climate and environmental protection are key challenges for the future. Our city can be proud to have so many scientific institutions and research centers working on creative solutions and communicating them clearly. In this context, the Fraunhofer WKI, with its clear unique position in this field of research, plays a particularly important role.”
Professor Angela Ittel, President of the Technical University of Braunschweig, emphasized the importance of scientific collaboration: “The Fraunhofer WKI is not only a recognized center of excellence in materials science, but also a key partner in our vision of the Technical University of Braunschweig as a networked ‘Ecoversity.’ Through the strategically coordinated collaboration between TU Braunschweig and the Fraunhofer Institutes on campus, we are creating a close integration of basic research and application—thereby accelerating and enhancing the success of our joint innovation process.”
The Director of Fraunhofer WKI, Professor Dr. Raoul Klingner, looks to the future with optimism based on the institute’s wealth of experience: “Building on our core competence and strong position in the field of renewable raw materials, we aim to systematically expand our range of services for our customers through our strategy, which is consistently focused on collaboration. We see particular development opportunities for our industry in the areas of AI and automated production, bio-based materials, as well as recycling and indoor air quality. We view timber construction as a driver of innovation across all areas of expertise at Fraunhofer WKI.”
Panel Discussion and Exhibition on Current Research Topics
The keynote address, “Wood from Local Forests—The Importance of Forest Conversion,” delivered by Dr. Klaus Merker, President of the Lower Saxony State Forestry Department and Vice Chair of iVTH e. V., was followed by a panel discussion. The discussion focused on the future.Wood and lignocellulose form a central pillar of the circular bioeconomy. There are high hopes and expectations for this renewable raw material with its unique properties. Wood construction is set to transform the construction industry and become a global carbon sink.
The celebration was accompanied by a small exhibition on current research topics, which sparked discussions about questions and potential solutions for the future. How can the expected “diverse” wood assortments from climate-adapted forests be processed into innovative products? How is digitalization changing our understanding of processes and raw materials? Will there be a digital twin of wood or trees, and if so, why?
Groundbreaking Ceremony for the New Technical Center
Construction work on the new technical center on the Riedenkamp campus also began today with a ceremonial groundbreaking. Plans call for the construction of a new technical center building spanning approximately 1,800 square meters, including the necessary infrastructure for Fraunhofer WKI’s wood-based materials and natural fiber technologies. It will serve industry-oriented research and development of sustainable materials and technologies.
The new testing hall not only replaces the aging technical center dating from the 1960s. Research processes can now be replicated on an industrial scale with partners from the woodworking and wood processing industries and specifically expanded to include the latest components of manufacturing automation. The three-story main building will house workshops as well as office and seminar rooms. With this new building, Fraunhofer WKI is positioning itself for the future in terms of technology. The project, which is funded equally by the federal government (Bundesministerium für
Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt) and the state of Lower Saxony (Niedersächsisches Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kultur), is a central component in the further development of the institute’s campus and contributes significantly to the expansion of research in the field of sustainable and bio-based materials. Completion of the building, which was commissioned by the Fraunhofer Society and is being designed by huber staudt architekten bda, is scheduled for autumn 2029.
