Center for Light and Environmentally-Friendly Structures - ZELUBA 2.0

Profile

From the “Center for Light and Environmentally-Friendly Structures ZELUBA®,” we are creating the “go-to place” for timber construction in academia and industry: ZELUBA 2.0.

Timber construction is a driver of innovation within the timber industry and the growth segment of the sector. The technical and infrastructural conditions at the Braunschweig location—Fraunhofer WKI, institutes at TU Braunschweig, and the “Timber Engineering” specialization—are ideally suited to create a unique selling point.

Pooling existing expertise and adopting a consistently collaborative approach offers the opportunity to establish a prominent timber construction hub in northern Germany. Embedded in the Technical University of Braunschweig’s “Ecoversity Strategy,” ZELUBA 2.0 provides the ideal conditions for a novel, vibrant Urban Transfer CoLab.

Our Goal

ZELUBA 2.0 is emerging as the leading interdisciplinary center of excellence for sustainable wood and wood-hybrid construction in Lower Saxony and beyond. As a joint innovation hub of the Technical University of Braunschweig and Fraunhofer WKI, it translates new materials, building products, fastening technologies, and reuse concepts into construction practice in a safe, cost-effective, and code-compliant manner.

ZELUBA 2.0

  • combines basic and applied research as well as industrial implementation with accredited testing, certification support, and consulting.
  • creates an open, trusting, and cross-institutional space for research, development, testing, and continuing education.
  • brings together scientific excellence and technical expertise, tailored to industrial needs.
  • supports the transformation of construction toward resource-efficient, recyclable, and future-proof wood and wood-hybrid building solutions.

Initial Topics

  • Wooden Towers for Wind Turbines
  • Wood-Steel Bonding and Wood-Concrete Composite Structures
  • Durability and Long-Term Behavior
  • Reuse of Building Components
  • Use of Hardwoods
  • New Products

Research Focuses

Hybrid material systems

We develop hybrid material systems for building construction. These offer numerous advantages from both an ecological and an economic point of view.

Load-bearing behaviour

We investigate the static-constructive properties of wood-based structures and materials through trials and simulations. Furthermore, we specialize in the consideration of the complex and holistic relationships.

Building physics

Building physics is of essential importance in wooden construction, as only buildings which have been structurally correctly constructed can remain durable and hold their value over centuries.

Fire protection

We develop new solutions for improving the fire protection of wood and wood-based materials focussing on intumescent fire-protection coatings, glowing combustion-resistant wood-fiber insulation materials, flame-retardant wood-plastic composite materials.

Numerical simulation

With numerical simulation we can visualize invisible effects, explain test results, create prognoses, validate hypotheses. We have our own measurement technology for verification of simulations as well as for examination of construction parts.

Cooperation with the TU Braunschweig

Innovative building for joint research

The Fraunhofer WKI's ”Center for Light and Environmentally-Friendly Structures ZELUBA®” is located on the campus of the Technische Universität Braunschweig and is closely connected to the “Institute of Building Materials, Concrete Construction and Fire Safety“ of the university. In line with the research at the ZELUBA®, the building consists of a hybrid construction with a high proportion of renewable raw materials.
