Industrial property rights play an important role for the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and therefore also for the Fraunhofer WKI. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft develops tangibly implementable and innovative solutions for industry, in particular for small and medium-sized enterprises. The clients thereby expect consequential economic advantages in national and international competition.

Through cooperation with universities and colleges, the gap is bridged between applied research and fundamental research. A whole series of interdisciplinary research projects provide the powering force for driving innovative developments forwards.

In order to protect new developments from imitation, these results must be legally protected. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is one of the most important patent applicants in Germany.
