Science Campus 2018

Science is becoming more and more female. We want to do everything we can in order to support this trend. Together with a number of partner universities, Fraunhofer has launched the “Fraunhofer Wissenschaftscampus” (Fraunhofer Science Campus), to which we warmly invite you.

The aim of our multi-day event is to provide you with inspiration concerning differing fields of research and career opportunities at Fraunhofer. Experience first-hand which projects we are currently researching and take a look over the shoulders of our scientists in the laboratory or clean room. In addition to exciting insights, your participation is, however, also requested: In high-quality workshops from “Design Thinking” to “Project Management”, you will be able to deepen your knowledge and will receive a valuable orientation guide for your career planning.

“Researching for more sustainability”: An invitation from the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research WKI

Sustainable developments and the application of renewable raw materials for the most varied applications, from adhesives to furniture, from the construction industry to the automotive sector, form the focus of the research at the Fraunhofer WKI. In the technical center for wood-based materials, you can work together with two female scientists to produce particle board from a tree, thereby discovering which advantages are offered by innovative materials made from renewable raw resources.

The scientists from the department for Surface Technology also use renewable raw materials such as sugar and vegetable oil. Participants can experience the value chain from the raw material through to the biopolymer for subsequent applications such as adhesives, paints and plastics.

Building products and consumer goods which are utilized in indoor areas can release unusual or unfamiliar odors. In order to identify these disruptive odors, the employees from the department for Material Analysis and Indoor Chemistry combine emission chamber measurements with procedures for odor evaluation using trained test persons. Today, you have the opportunity of determining the odor intensity, hedonic effect and odor type of interior materials yourself.

What makes research at Fraunhofer special, and which career paths are possible? Come along to the Science Campus and you can discuss such questions directly with scientists from the WKI. We look forward to your participation!
