“Salon der Wissenschaft” (Salon of Science)
How can fungal mycelium be used as a biological binder to manufacture sustainable building construction materials? Does this also work in industrial mass production? You can discuss this in person with Dr. Henrik-Alexander Christ, scientist at Fraunhofer WKI, at the ”Salon der Wissenschaft” (Salon of Science).
Fungal mycelium is a promising alternative to conventional industrial adhesives based on petroleum and natural gas. The growth of wood-decaying fungi on plant residues creates innovative biocomposites that are not only environmentally friendly but also optimize the resource efficiency. One particular advantage: With the help of fungal mycelium, materials and insulation materials can be allowed to grow into virtually any shape and size. In further processing steps, these materials can be refined to further improve their properties. The Fraunhofer WKI focuses on hot pressing.
What is the “Salon der Wissenschaft” (Salon of Science)?
Once a year, the “Salon der Wissenschaft” invites everyone to come and talk to researchers from the Braunschweig region.
There will be no lectures, the focus will be on personal dialog.
