PÜZ | Testing, Monitoring and Certification

The competence of the department as a material and product testing body for many mechanical-physical and selected chemical tests on wood and wood-based materials is verified by various accreditations and recognitions.

Accreditation as a certification body by the German Accreditation Body “Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle (DAkkS)”

The Certification Body of the Fraunhofer WKI has the competence according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17065:2013 to carry out certifications of products, processes and services in the following areas:

  • Certification of construction products (external monitoring and certification procedures of the Fraunhofer WKI)
  • Chain of custody of timber products in accordance with PEFC rules and regulations (PEFC Chain of Custody of Forest Based Products)
  • Certification of wood, wood-based panels and products made of wood and wood-based panels with formaldehyde emission requirements
  • Certification of construction products (system for assessment and verification of constancy of performance 1) and factory production control (system 2+) under Regulation No 305/2011 laying down harmonised conditions for the marketing of construction products (Construction Products Regulation)

Accreditation as a testing body by the German Accreditation Body “Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle (DAkkS)”

The test laboratory of the Fraunhofer WKI has the competence according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 to carry out tests in the following areas:

  • Chemical testing of wood and wood-based materials
  • Testing of wood-based materials for evaluation and verification of formaldehyde emission requirements
  • Mechanical testing of building materials, building products (wood-based materials, flooring, furniture) and their auxiliaries (adhesives)
  • Testing of construction products (system 3) within the framework of Regulation (EU) No. 305/2011 laying down harmonized conditions for the marketing of construction products (Construction Products Regulation)

Notification according to EU Construction Products Regulation

The Fraunhofer WKI has been designated (notified) by the German Institute for Construction Technology (DIBt) according to the EU Construction Products Regulation (No. 305/2011). We have the authority to carry out independent third party activities for assessment and verification of constancy of performance as :

  • Product Certification Body,
  • certification body for factory production control
  • Testing laboratory

Notification according to Lower Saxony Building Code (NBauO)

The Fraunhofer WKI is a testing, monitoring and certification body for construction products and types of construction recognized by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs, Health and Gender Equality in accordance with the Lower Saxony Building Code (NBauO).

Recognition according to California Code of Regulations (ATCM)

Fraunhofer WKI is recognized by the California Air Resources Board (ARB) under the California Code of Regulations (ATCM, Title 17, Section 93120.4). We have the authority to certify wood-based materials as a “Third Party Certifier” according to the formaldehyde emission regulations in force in California.

Notification according to EPA Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Title VI

The Fraunhofer WKI is a recognized “Third Party Certifier (TPC)” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) according to the EPA regulation “formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products Act, Title VI to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) - ‘TSCA Title VI’ – Final rule 40 CFR Part 770”. We have the authority to certify wood-based materials with regard to the formaldehyde emission regulations appliable in the U.S.A.
