Shaking Table (MTS 1.5 m Uniaxial Seismic Simulator)

Location: Braunschweig (ZELUBA®)

The photo shows the interior of a hall. A rectangular foundation is embedded in the hall floor, on which the shaking table stands. The shaking table consists of a solid plate measuring 1.5 x 1.5 meters with an engine block attached to it.

Through the research and development of sustainable construction methods and vehicle components, the Fraunhofer WKI is making a contribution towards the achievement of climate targets and the conservation of resources. This also includes the research and evaluation of the vibration behavior of new materials, components and constructions. With the aid of a uniaxial dynamic vibration table (“shaking table”), we have the ability at the Fraunhofer WKI to investigate individual components and complete structures with regard to their structural dynamic properties - in order to achieve the highest level of safety.

Vibrations occur everywhere where movement takes place. Buildings must primarily be able to withstand wind loads. Depending on the location, vibrations from road, rail and air traffic or earthquakes can also occur. In vehicles, stresses due to uneven road surfaces play a decisive role. In addition, the mechanical loads can superimpose and can also occur in combination with climatic loads and temperature influences.

We perform vibration tests in accordance with standards as well as specific customer requirements. The movements, deformations and damages are monitored and evaluated by means of optical and sensor measuring technology. Vibration profiles in the forms of sine, noise and shock are possible. As a result, the mapping of harmonic, alternating and abrupt loads is enabled as well as the testing of components under real conditions. This also includes the consideration of climatic-mechanical interactions as well as multi-axial mechanical loads. In addition to standardized tests, we can also compile and perform customized test profiles.
