Switchable and functionalizable polymers for surface coatings and matrix materials

Conceivable fields of application include functional coatings, switchable structural adhesives, matrix materials for fiber-composite plastics, organic sheets and 3D printing. During the Webinar, a scientific assistant from the Surface Technology department will present the results achieved to date in the development of these polymers, to which a multitude of functionalities can be attached in accordance with a modular principle.

Originating from a base polymer, a modular polymer construction enables the regulation of properties such as hydrophobicity, hydrophilicity and biocidal effect as well as combinations thereof. Via this mechanism, the researchers also accomplish reversible crosslinking of the polymer chains, which allows the linking of thermoplastic properties, such as fusibility, with thermosetting properties, such as high tensile and flexural strengths, low creep tendency and high chemical resistance within a material.
