Together with the IfBB - Institute for Bioplastics and Biocomposites of the Hochschule Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, the Application Center HOFZET® is located on the campus of the Hochschule Hannover. In 2012, the Fraunhofer WKI Application Center HOFZET® provided the Hochschule Hannover with one of the first Fraunhofer application centers nationwide. Previously, they had not been located at “Hochschulen” only Universities.

The two research institutions operate a joint technical center for bioplastics and composite materials with state-of-the-art equipment as well as a range of laboratories in the fields of plastics and fiber-composite technology. In November 2022, the Fraunhofer WKI researchers moved into a new office building. Mutual research priorities for the scientists are sustainability, materials development and component development as well as circular economy and recycling. Research in the field of renewable raw materials is becoming increasingly important, particularly within the context of climate protection.

Sustainability through the utilization of renewable raw materials has formed the focus at the Fraunhofer WKI for 75 years. The institute, with locations in Braunschweig, Hanover, and Wolfsburg, specializes in process engineering, natural-fiber composites, binders and coatings, wood and emission protection, quality assurance of wood products, material and product testing, recycling procedures and the utilization of organic building materials and wood in construction. Virtually all the procedures and materials resulting from the research activities are applied industrially.

The IfBB – Institute for Bioplastics and Biocomposites is affiliated with Faculty II, Mechanical and Bioprocess Engineering, of the Hochschule Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts at the location in Hannover-Ahlem. In addition to the development of new bio-based materials and their testing and processing, the main priorities of the research work are sustainability assessment, the recycling of plastics and the circular economy.
