Gluing, bonding and adhesives

Research topic

Adhesives are an essential component of wood products. They influence both the mechanical and the hygric properties as well as the emission behavior of the products. With an innovative team of scientists from the two fields of chemistry and wood technology, we develop future-oriented solutions for the further development and adaptation of adhesives for wood and wood-based materials.

We are networked with companies throughout the entire value chain as well as with numerous research facilities, in close cooperation with whom we plan, develop and implement new research approaches. We are able to test new developments directly in our test center for adhesives and bondings.

Our research spectrum is extremely diverse. The focus is currently being directed primarily upon the development of low-formaldehyde and formaldehyde-free adhesives as well as isocyanate-based systems. Our many years of practical research have enabled us to acquire considerable expertise, particularly in the following fields:

  • Bonding of composite materials with wood (e.g. WPC)
  • Bonding on demand
  • Adhesive modification with renewable raw materials
  • Wood acetylation

Furthermore, our research spectrum will be extended in the future to include bonding under high frequency. For this purpose, an in-house high-frequency laboratory press will be available at the Fraunhofer WKI.
