Webinar 52: Fiber spraying with natural fibers – Procedural options and potential applications

The high-value utilization of natural fibers and their derivatives for technical applications in small and large-scale production forms the focus of the current research activities at the Fraunhofer WKI.

For the creation of innovative components from (bio/hybrid) fiber-reinforced composites (FRC), amongst other things a fiber spraying facility is used, which produces so-called “tailored composites”. Grammage, fiber type, fiber cut length and fiber orientation can be hereby specifically adapted to the component geometry.

With the aid of the fiber spraying facility, the researchers at the Fraunhofer WKI develop and realize novel (bio/hybrid) FRC and integrate the technology into corresponding process chains. In addition to conventional high-performance fibers such as carbon, glass or aramid, the fiber spraying facility also enables cellulose-based fibers, such as viscose, flax or hemp, to be cut and sprayed. Thermosetting resin systems or hybrid yarns, which have already been combined with a thermoplastic, are deployed as matrices.
