Veneer-based materials research

In view of the lack of experience with wood in technical-structural applications, the production and testing of (hybrid) laminated veneer lumber as well as the optimization of the necessary technological processes forms a current focus of the research work at the Fraunhofer WKI.

In the institute’s technical center for wood-based materials, the entire manufacturing process can be portrayed: from the steaming or boiling of the trunk, through the peeling and drying of the veneer, and on to the pressing of the laminated veneer woods or three-dimensional (structural) components.

In this Webinar, current research and development work as well as the results of veneer-based materials research at the Fraunhofer WKI will be presented. As an example, tests are being carried out to determine whether low-quality beech veneer can be processed in the middle layers of veneer-based (hybrid) materials without significant loss of strength and, thereby, whether it might also be suitable for high-quality applications.
