(New) processes for wood modification

The demands on wood and wood-based materials are continuously increasing. In particular the limited durability of some types of wood, such as beech or birch, prevents their use in many areas. The chemical modification of wood is therefore a modern method for improving material properties such as dimensional stability, durability, and resilience against wood-destroying fungi and insects. This enables new areas of application to be opened up for wood, as a result of which it gains in competitiveness against other materials such as plastic, metal and concrete.

In this Webinar, we will introduce different types of wood modification and will discuss their manufacturing processes and chemical backgrounds. Using the example of the research project “FiveKet”, a new potential process for the wood modification of thin veneers and wood fibers by means of gaseous ketene will be presented.
